DESCRIPTION:Support the library this holiday season at our Annual Wreath Fundraiser. \nThis year we have two options: \n1.) Purchase a pre-decorated wreath in red\, burgundy\, or plaid. Pre-decorated wreaths are $35. Pick up will take place on Saturday\, December 6 between 10:00am-2:00pm at the Union University Church Center. \n2.) Purchase a plain wreath and decorate with us at our event! Plain wreaths are $30.  Join us at the Union University Church Center Saturday\, December 6 between 10:00am-2:00pm to decorate your wreath with us. We’ll provide all decorating supplies\, holiday music\, and refreshments. \nAll wreaths are made by Lisa’s Wreaths of East Wind Nursery. \nAll proceeds benefit the Alfred Box of Books Library.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Cumming Nature Center educators at the library for a nature observation walk around the library.  Participants will documents the plants\, animals\, and other natural phenomena they observe. \nAfter the walk\, attendees will create their own phenology wheel to continue recording nature observations throughout the year. A phenology wheel is a visual representation of seasonal change.  It is an art project that anyone can create and enjoy! \nThis program incorporates STEAM topics including art\, citizen science\, cyclical and seasonal changes\, and scientific inquiry. \nChildren must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  Event will happen rain or shine\, so please dress accordingly.

Crandall Hook and Ladder\, Alfred Police Department\, and Bicycle Man to hold a bike safety event.  Get fitted for a free bike helmet and an officer from Alfred PD will go over bike safety. We’ll also have tons of giveaways including FREE books! Bicycle Man will be on hand to show off recumbent bikes and do some minor bike repairs. \nThis year\, we’ll also be hosting a community bike ride.  Ride from the fire hall\, down Main Street\, turn left on Church street\, then left on Mill Street.  Continue left onto West University\, back onto Main street and back to the fire hall.  The fire department will have traffic blocked for this event. \n

SUMMARY:Family Birding with Eli Knapp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with ornithologist and author\, Dr. Eli Knapp.  From Houghton University\, Dr. Knapp will discuss local birding as well as discuss his own adventures in studying birds in Tanzania.  His most recent book\, Dead Serious: Wild Hope Amid the Sixth Extinction is available at the library. \nFrom Houghton University:\nDr. Eli Knapp teaches courses in Human Ecology\, Wildlife Behavior\, Geology\, Ornithology\, Conservation Biology\, and Swahili at Houghton University\, in New York\, and in Tanzania\, East Africa.  In Tanzania\, he directs the Houghton-in-Tanzania study abroad\, semester-long program.  He has also taught Forest Ecology and Ecosystems Research for the Creation Care Studies Program\, in New Zealand.  He holds a Masters in Environmental Science and Management from the University of Santa Barbara\, California (2003)\, and a PhD in Ecology from Colorado State University\, in Fort Collins\, Colorado (2009).  His interests lie in the interactions between humans and the environment\, especially around protected areas.  He has studied human-environment relationships most extensively in East Africa and lived in Serengeti National Park\, in Tanzania\, for three years.  His active areas of research involve household economies and poaching around protected areas.
