SUMMARY:Family Birding with Eli Knapp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with ornithologist and author\, Dr. Eli Knapp.  From Houghton University\, Dr. Knapp will discuss local birding as well as discuss his own adventures in studying birds in Tanzania.  His most recent book\, Dead Serious: Wild Hope Amid the Sixth Extinction is available at the library. \nFrom Houghton University:\nDr. Eli Knapp teaches courses in Human Ecology\, Wildlife Behavior\, Geology\, Ornithology\, Conservation Biology\, and Swahili at Houghton University\, in New York\, and in Tanzania\, East Africa.  In Tanzania\, he directs the Houghton-in-Tanzania study abroad\, semester-long program.  He has also taught Forest Ecology and Ecosystems Research for the Creation Care Studies Program\, in New Zealand.  He holds a Masters in Environmental Science and Management from the University of Santa Barbara\, California (2003)\, and a PhD in Ecology from Colorado State University\, in Fort Collins\, Colorado (2009).  His interests lie in the interactions between humans and the environment\, especially around protected areas.  He has studied human-environment relationships most extensively in East Africa and lived in Serengeti National Park\, in Tanzania\, for three years.  His active areas of research involve household economies and poaching around protected areas.

DESCRIPTION:The purchase of a ticket provides you with a 24″ Douglas Fir wreath made by East Wind Nursery and decorations.  This year\, your ticket also provides a tour of Alfred’s Christmas House! \nLike last year\, you can choose to attend our wreath decorating event and decorate your wreath with us.  Or request a grab-and-go kit and take your wreath home to decorate.  The library will provide a variety of bows\, ribbon\, colorful balls\, pinecones\, snowflakes. \nWreath Decorating and Pick Up: 10:00am-1:00pm at the Union University Church Center \nHouse Tour: 12:00pm-3:00pm at 56 West University Street. Children are welcome accompanied by an adult.  \nRefreshments will be provided at both locations. \nTickets are $40 each and can be purchased at the library or through any library board member. \nTickets will be available only until Thursday\, November 21. \nHave questions? DESCRIPTION:The Box of Books and Libraries at Alfred University will be hosting Perry Ground\, storyteller and member of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.  Perry will be sharing his “Stories From the People of the Longhouse” with a slightly spooky twist.  This event is planned for the lawn outside Herrick Library on the Alfred University campus. There will be a small bonfire as well as cider and donuts. In the event of rain\, the event will move to the Book End Lounge in Herrick Library.
